On 11 September, MPs are expected to vote again on assisted suicide. This is not simply another parliamentary debate. It is a decision that could profoundly affect how our society protects people who are seriously ill, elderly, disabled or vulnerable.
We all want people approaching the end of life to be treated with dignity, compassion and proper care. But assisted suicide is not the answer to suffering, loneliness, fear or inadequate support. The answer is better palliative care, stronger safeguards and a society that tells every person: your life matters, you are not a burden, and you will not be abandoned.
The proposals now returning to Westminster remain deeply unsafe. They would allow assisted suicide to be raised with vulnerable patients, including those who have not asked for it. That creates a real risk of pressure, subtle coercion or a sense that choosing death is expected. Concerns have also been raised about people with hidden disabilities, eating disorders or complex medical conditions being inadequately protected. Once the principle is accepted, there is a serious danger that assisted suicide could come to be seen as a cheaper or easier alternative to high-quality care.
Before your MP votes, please make sure they hear from you. A short email matters. A personal letter can have even greater impact. A respectful meeting, especially where you can explain your concerns or share personal experience, would be even better, if you are able.
Please contact your MP today and urge them to vote no. Ask them to defend vulnerable people and focus on fixing care, not legalising assisted suicide. Every message is counted. Every voice matters. Yours could make the difference.
