SPUC Dundee will hold a silent candlelit vigil in Dundee City Square on Thursday 29 October 2026, from 6pm to 8pm, marking the anniversary of the passing of the 1967 Abortion Act.
The vigil comes amid continuing concern over abortion rates in Scotland. Figures cited by the organisers indicate that 18,783 abortions were carried out in Scotland last year, an increase on the previous year and the highest number recorded.
The figures also highlight significant social inequalities, with women living in Scotland’s most deprived communities reportedly twice as likely to undergo an abortion as those in the least deprived areas. Dundee City is reported to have the highest termination rate in Scotland.
The event will provide an opportunity for quiet reflection, remembrance and prayer. Organisers are inviting members of the public to join them in remembering lives lost through abortion and offering prayers for mothers, fathers and families who have experienced difficulties or distress following an abortion.
All are welcome to attend the vigil, which will take place in silence as a gesture of remembrance, compassion and solidarity.
