An invitation to join national Holy Year Pilgrimage

Press releases

As part of the celebrations for the Jubilee Year 2025, the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland is organising a national Pilgrimage to St Andrews and Dunfermline, on Saturday 25th October, 2025, and parishes across Dunkeld Diocese are warmly invited to join the national pilgrims at various points along the route.

The pilgrimage will make its first major stop in the historic village of Markinch, about 11am, where participants will visit the pre-Reformation Church of St Drostan—the oldest building in continuous use in Scotland. A guided tour will highlight the church’s remarkable history, including the ancient marks on its walls left by archers sharpening their arrows before the Battle of Bannockburn.

Pilgrims will enjoy tea and coffee in the church hall (a small donation is requested) before travelling on to St Andrews, arriving around 1pm. There will be a short service in St James’ Church, followed by free time in St Andrews until 4pm, when the group continues to Dunfermline for the Vigil Mass in St Margaret’s Church at 5:30pm.

While the main group of pilgrims will be travelling to and from Motherwell, those from Dunkeld Diocese are encouraged to join the journey at any stage — whether in Markinch, St Andrews, or Dunfermline — to share in this special moment of faith and fellowship.
