Schools

The Diocese of Dunkeld has issued a formal statement following confirmation that the Scottish Government will not intervene in Clackmannanshire Council’s decision to relocate St Mungo’s RC Primary School, Alloa, to the Alloa Academy building.

The statement reads in full:

CLACKMANNANSHIRE COUNCIL – RELOCATION OF ST MUNGO’S PRIMARY SCHOOL, ALLOA

The Scottish Government has informed the Diocese of Dunkeld that it will not intervene on Clackmannanshire Council’s decision to relocate St. Mungo’s Primary School Alloa to the Alloa Academy building

Statement Diocese of Dunkeld

  1. We do not agree with the Scottish Government’s decision not to intervene in the decision by Clackmannanshire Council to permanently relocate St Mungo’s RC Primary to the site of Alloa Academy. We believe that there were legal grounds for this intervention.
  2. The Diocese notes that the Scottish Government acknowledged that

a. Clackmannanshire Council relocated St Mungo’s originally as an emergency measure.
b. Clackmannanshire Council failed to convince the parents and communities of both schools, Alloa Academy and St Mungo’s, that this measure was for the best.
c. Clackmannanshire Council has failed to reach an agreement with the Catholic Church regarding the permanent relocation of St Mungo’s RC Primary School to the site of Alloa Academy.

  1. The Diocese also observes that the Scottish Government noted the concerns of the community of St Mungo’s, the Catholic Church, and the reservations of HMI regarding the suitability of the facilities, the education benefits, and the ability of St Mungo’s to fully express their beliefs and religious practices.
  2. Our priority is to support the children, parents, staff and wider community of St Mungo’s RC Primary School, and we shall continue to work with the Council and other bodies to further the educational and religious aspirations of that wonderful school.
  3. In the meantime, we shall consult our education and legal representatives concerning the decision by the Scottish Government.
