Chrism Mass in Dundee

Press releases

On Wednesday 16th June 2025, the annual Mass of Chrism was solemnly celebrated at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Dundee. The liturgy was presided over by Bishop Andrew McKenzie and was attended by priests from every parish across the Diocese. The cathedral was filled in a powerful expression of unity and renewal within the diocesan family.

The Mass of Chrism holds a special and unique place within the liturgical life of the Church, traditionally taking place during Holy Week. During this Mass, three sacred oils are blessed or consecrated by the Bishop – The Oil of Catechumens – used in the preparation of those who are to be baptised, symbolising strength and the renunciation of sin; The Oil of the Sick – used in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, bringing comfort, healing, and spiritual strength to those suffering from illness; and The Sacred Chrism – a perfumed oil that is consecrated, not merely blessed. It is used in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders, and for the dedication of churches and altars. It symbolises the fullness of grace and the presence of the Holy Spirit.

The Mass also includes the renewal of priestly promises, during which priests reaffirm their commitment to service and unity with their Bishop. This moving moment reflects the deep bonds of fraternity and dedication shared by those in priestly ministry.

The Mass of Chrism is a powerful symbol of the Church’s unity in faith and mission. It reminds all present—clergy and laity alike—of their shared calling to holiness, service, and witness in the name of Christ.
