Dundee’s Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ, celebrated their Feast Day on Saturday 12th June, by getting together with Sisters from convents across Europe – from what forms the St Theresa of the Child Jesus Region of the Order – representing 30 convents in Italy, England, Germany, Ireland and Scotland. The Sisters ‘Zoom’-ed together for Mass celebrated by Fr Jude Mukoro – priest in residence at St Mary Magdalene’s Church, Perth.
The Order was founded in 1937 by Archbishop Charles Heerey, C.S.Sp. when he was the Vicar Apostolic of Onitsha-Owerri, in Nigeria. As a missionary priest and bishop, he had witnessed the havoc that lack of health and medical services, combined with the oppressive effects of ignorance, inflicted on his flock especially the underprivileged in the 1930s. Women and children were the greatest victims.
The Order is now worldwide and, among their many charisms, the European Sisters can be found supporting Healthcare in Hospitals & Nursing homes, Education, Pastoral Care and Social Services with Youths and Immigrants; Soup kitchen for the Homeless and Animation of Pilgrimages.
Fr Jude celebrated the Mass in the beautifully renovated Perth church – with the readings and hymns being contributed by the Sisters.
