The Diocese of Dunkeld has been informed that the priests of the Association of the Family of Mary Immaculate and St Francis, known as the Marian Franciscans (Men), have asked that the Association be formally dissolved.
Bishop Philip Egan, Bishop of the Diocese of Portsmouth, where the association is constituted, has agreed to this request and the appropriate canonical and practical steps are now being taken.
The dissolution will take effect from 23:59hrs on 31 May 2026.
A full statement from the Diocese of Portsmouth is available here:
Fr Philomeno Gilfoyle will continue on in Dundee to make necessary arrangements before returning to his home diocese of Portsmouth on 14th June.
Please pray for the members of the community as they discern the next steps, and for all those who have been supported by their ministry.
From Sunday 21st June, the Latin Mass Community will be served by Fr Martin Pletts, Parish Priest of St James, Kinross. Mass in the Extraordinary Form will continue to be celebrated at St Joseph’s Chapel, Lawside, Dundee.
Further details will be provided once arrangements have been finalised.
The Diocese recognises the ministry of the Marian Franciscans, and the prayer, generosity and friendship offered to them by the lay faithful and others who have supported the community over their time in Dundee.
This dissolution only applies to the Marian Franciscan Men and the convent at Lawside will continue to be occupied by the Franciscan Family of the Immaculate Heart and of St Maximilian until further notice.
