First Mass – St Joseph’s, Dundee

Ordained on Wednesday 6th July 2022, Malcolm Hutchison (32) is a native of Dundee, from the parish of St Joseph’s in Wilkies Lane.

He attended Blackness Primary School and then the Harris Academy before studying Chemistry at Edinburgh University. He worked at a clothing manufacturer for a year or so before returning to study Divinity while continuing to work in Edinburgh, latterly for a notable haggis-producing family.

Malcolm said, “ I was not raised as a Catholic in Dundee – it was only when I went to university that I really discovered my Faith, finding that special joy in the life of Jesus Christ and the salvation which He has attained for us, and that living link to Christ through the Church which He founded.”

“I was baptised by the Dominican Friars in Edinburgh and have enjoyed gaining a greater experience of the Church and all her people since then, especially getting to know the Church in Dundee and the whole diocese which I had missed out on when I was younger.”

His studies for the priesthood began at the Royal Scots College in Valladolid, Spain and then continued the Pontifical Scots College in Rome. The academic part of formation for priesthood consists of two years of philosophical studies and then a theology degree, studying with people from all over the world. The final years in Rome are spent studying a postgraduate degree specialising in some area of study.

During the latter stages of his priestly formation Fr Malcolm worked in St John’s, Perth, and St Mary’s, Lochee; St Andrew’s Cathedral and then in St Fillan’s, Crieff.

Following his ordination Fr Malcolm has now returned to Rome for a final year of study for the Licence in Patristic at the Augustinian Institute.
