Warm tributes were paid to Monsignor Basil O’Sullivan as clergy, parishioners, friends and civic leaders marked the remarkable 70th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood during a Mass at Dunblane’s Holy Family Church on Friday 14th August, 2026..
Mgr O’Sullivan’s seven decades of ministry were recalled as a life of faithful and generous service to the Church and to the communities in which he has served. Particular tribute was paid to his years in Auchterarder and Dunblane, and to the pastoral care he offered following the Dunblane tragedy in 1996.
Canon Kevin Golden, Vicar General, gave a homily in which he described Mgr O’Sullivan as a gift to the Diocese of Dunkeld, whose steadfastness, good example and willingness to serve had inspired generations of priests. She paid special tribute to Mg O’Sullivan’s pastoral ministry during the tragedy which struck Dunblane in 1996. “At a time of almost unimaginable suffering and unspeakable evil, he is remembered as a priest who became for the community the face of Christ and the loving hands of the Good Shepherd. His presence, compassion and care reached not only his own parishioners but the wider community and, in time, people affected by similar tragedy overseas.”
Messages of congratulations were also received from Pope Leo XIV, First Minister John Swinney and Chris Kane MP.
In his message, Pope Leo praised Mgr O’Sullivan’s pastoral care, exercised with “zeal and diligence”, and recalled especially his dedication to the victims and families affected by the Dunblane tragedy. The Holy Father imparted his Apostolic Blessing on Mgr O’Sullivan, his relatives and parishioners.
John Swinney said the Monsignor had given “a lifetime of service to God and His people”, bringing strength and comfort to many, while Chris Kane MP spoke of the great affection in which he is held by people of all faiths and none, describing him as an inspirational leader in the wider community.
At the conclusion of Mass, parish priest Fr Charles Angelo spoke on behalf of the parishioners of Holy Family, Dunblane, saying their efforts to celebrate the anniversary had been made for one simple reason: “Because we love you.” He described Mgr O’Sullivan as an inspiration, a good shepherd, a mentor to many and “a legend in the vineyard of the Lord”.
Fr Charles then presented a spiritual bouquet from parishioners, including 186 Masses, 226 Rosaries, 1,090 Our Fathers, 1,382 Hail Marys and 595 Memorares offered for Mgr O’Sullivan, together with a further parish gift.
Bishop Andrew McKenzie added the thanks of the Diocese of Dunkeld, describing him as a “bridge-builder” who had built bridges of care, love and concern among people and, most importantly, had helped build a bridge between them and Jesus Christ.
Responding to the tributes, Mgr O’Sullivan thanked Bishop Andrew, Fr Charles and the parishioners and reflected with characteristic humility on the welcome and kindness he had received since coming from Ireland to serve in Scotland in 1956. He said the anniversary was ultimately an occasion to thank God for the grace, blessings and love which had sustained his 70 years of priestly ministry.
